Post-war and the 1950s
The end of the Second World War was something of a reverse in situation. The British workforce needed more people in order to aid recovery from the war and as a result immigration regulations were relaxed.
In 1950 there were only about 40,000 non- white Britons, mainly in ports like Liverpool, Bristol, and Cardiff. People from the West Indies ( the Carribian) began immigrating to Britain in substantial numbers.
Before the Second World War these immigrants were mostly white people from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
After the Second World War, Britain started recruiting European workers to help rebuilt its shattered economy.
Large groups of Poles, Italians, Irish made the move to the UK to provide labour to important industries that were needed to help the economy recover. All these new workers came to escape poverty in their own countries. However the supply of European workers wasn't
